40. Because New Zealand is a very hilly country you can see in every landscape some skimming light. The sun was never high in the sky because it was winter. This kind of light always causes nice plastic shapes through the beautiful shadows. In a flat country like Holland you can only see this when the sun is low. |

39. "Trees nr. 6"
When it is summer here, it is winter in New Zealand. But during our stay the wheather was usually better then in Holland in the summer. This picture was taken according to the same principle as picture nr. 37. If the sun was not hidden behind the tree the whole picture would be washed out by the much too strong sunlight. Now you get beautiful backlight in the leaves with fall colours and also nice shadows on the grass. It gives the picture an extra sense of depth. Because our white camper was parked in such a way that it reflected the sunlight unto the treetrunk you can still see some detail in the trunk. Without this shadow it would have been a dark silhouet. |

38. In mountainous areas you can often find beautiful cloudy skies. For the right exposure measure on the piece of sky that's between the lightest and the darkest part. But a slight underexposure makes the sky even more dramatic. |

37. "Trees nr. 5"
Shooting straight into the sun usually creates a lot of problems like too much contrast and flare (ugly lightspots on the picture) By choosing a position in which the sun disappears behind a tree for instance, you can avoid some of these problems. I decided to take advantage of the ugly utility wires and incorporated them in my composition. |

REFLECTIONS
35. "Lines in landscapes nr. 10"
and Snow and Ice nr. 2"
When flying from Japan to the Netherlands one spends hours above this kind of landscape. About 75% of the flying time is above Russia.
