ISO 200, 200mm, aperture 2.8 (fully open), 1/30 of a second, I was leaning against a tree because I didn't take a tripod along.
Usually I don't give technical information, I forget it as soon as the picture has been taken, but in this case I remembered because it's about as far as you can go without a tripod. Even if I would have had a tripod with me, I wouldn't have had the time to use it, because the light was disappearing rapidly and the cow was moving around.

The sun is at an enormous distance from the earth, so its rays reach the earth parallel to each other. Why then are the shadows in this picture not parallel. It looks as if the sun hangs in the sky not far behind the trees.

The evening sun gives the sky an orange colour. This part of the Netherlands used to be the bottom of a sea. Lots of trees have been planted here, along the roads, but also in the shape of small forests. There is an amazing amount of wildlife in this new territory.

This picture was taken with Kodachrome 64, a slidefilm. Slidefilm can handle only a small contrast. That means that the dark parts are going to look even darker and the light parts are going to look lighter. Fortunately there was a haze in the sky which tempered the sun. Also the reflection of the snow makes the contrast lower. Everything was hoarfrosted. |

By Dutch standards it's quite a plain picture. A road made of bricks, an old man on a bicycle and a straight horizon with a totally flat landscape is something typically Dutch. I try to to see Holland with the eyes of somebody who is in our country for the first time. |

The tower of Loenen on the river Vecht. The picture was taken across one of the lakes in Loosdrecht. With weather like this almost all colour disappears from the landscape, especially when a telephoto lens is used. A huge contrast with the previous picture.

23. This picture almost completely consists of round and triangular forms. If you project an imaginary line through the tops of the buoys you can see another curved line. Although the sun is very bright, see the shadows on the two yellow buoys bottom left, those harsh shadows are filled in again by yellow reflected light. The yellow buoys make the sky look even bluer. I chose a low viewpoint to get a nice contrast with the red rings against the blue sky. Notice the change in intensity in the blue sky. The colour is getting more intense in the direction of the zenith. In an airplane high in the sky the zenith looks almost black, the real "colour" of the vacuous universe. 14. "Sun nr. 3"
Usually I try to tell you how to take good pictures. This picture is to show you where it can go wrong. I meant to take a photograph like nr. 1 (Archives May) Because I was standing in the wrong place at first, I had to drive about 1 km further on. Then I was in a real hurry, I used the wrong lens and I used intervals that were too short. Because of the wrong lens, I had to enlarge the picture very much, which is not good for the quality. With the right telelens and 3 minute intervals it would have been a lot better. So, good preparation is half the job. |

13. "Sun nr. 2"
The moon moves between the sun and the earth. In this picture the eclipse is almost over. The last opportunity without an ND-filter, f.22 and 1/1000. In this picture you look straight into the light source, the maximum amount of light. The branches on the right do not reflect light, they only block it. The contrast in this picture is maximal. A picture on your screen can never be brighter than the screen, but because of the high contrast it looks like the sun is really shining. |

11. "Dauwtrappen" literally means: "stepping on the dew" It's a very old custom in our country. A walk on certain holidays, the walk starts before sunrise. In this case through an area that's normally closed to the public. |

10. When the out of many colours composed white sunlight falls on an object, some colours are absorbed by the surface (for instance the paint coating) The colours that are not absorbed are reflected, these reflected colours we call the colour of an object. The wet beach in the previous photograph looks blue, because the blue sky is reflected in it.
