There are dozens of shafts in the neighbourhood and the deepest one was 3800 feet, well over 1 km. (1970)
There are also a number of smelters, so the air and the surrounding countryside were extremely polluted at that time.

Because of the current affairs in Ukraine some pictures of 44 years ago taken in Canada.
In 1970 I lived in Sudbury, a mining town in the north of the province of Ontario. North is as seen through the eyes of the majority of Ontarians who live in the south. North of Sudbury there is still a vast amount of Canada. Seen on a national scale it's still in the south.
In the local theatre there was a performace by the Red Army Choir, they were touring Canada.
Sudbury was the home of Balts, Poles but especially a lot of Ukranians. They had fled from the USSR in the past and didn't have very fond memories of the Red Army.
Later in the theatre I saw some demonstrators in the audience, they were listening to the performance. They could understand the language and knew some of the songs. They felt "at home" in a strange way.
Nostalgia is a weird phenomenon.

In Yalta the atmosphere was much more relaxed than in the rest of the USSR. Taking pictures of a harbour was no problem at all. In Novosibirsk taking a picture of an old house was enough to get me into trouble. The relaxed atmosphere of 42 years ago is at this moment far away.

From 1976 till 1973 I lived in Canada. Among other things I took the course in Creative Photography at Humber College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto.
A group of students and teachers of this school got an invitation to travel to the Soviet Union.
I was one of the lucky students.
The slides were taken in 1972, so they are over 40 years old now.

In Soviet times, the Muslim faith was condoned.
It looked more like discouragement.
Although the old buildings were very well maintained and restored. Often they were in use as a museum. You had to pay a small entrance fee. See the man behind the table.

We couldn't have wished for better guides. Two cheerful young ladies who spoke English fluently. They organized everything perfectly. Intourist was a rather strict travel organization in soviet times, but we didn't really experience it that way.

On the window: Remont, same as at the shoeshop.
The rest of the text is not very clear, but it has to do with photography.

From Novosibirsk we flew to Tashkent in Uzbekistan.
It was a completely different atmosphere.
From a chilly, very Russian Siberia to a muslim republic with a pleasantly warm climate.
In the previous picture in Siberia the women were wearing headscarves against the cold, in Uzbekistan they wore them for religious reasons.
Uzbekistan borders on Afghanistan.

The penetrating smell of the soviet cigarette is something I will never forget.
Drinking was also a hobby.
We rode on our coach through a small village.
It was late afternooon and there were a lot of drunk men in the street.
I asked our guide if there were problems with alcoholics.
The answer: "They are not alcoholics, they only drink a lot"
