249. One of the most difficult things to show in a photograph is a gradient. In picture nr. 248 I did that with the help of the houses in the foreground, they are horizontal. The road with a gradient of 33% I mentioned in picture nr. 248 is not far from the place where I took today's picture. The roads in this area are so narrow that special passing places have been constructed. You just wait there when you see somebody coming. Every driver always waves in appreciation for the trouble taken.

Great Britain is in our view the most underestimated holiday country of Europe. We really like the footpaths in Great Britain. Wish we had a system like that in the Netherlands. This is close to a cottage of our friends, we stayed there a few times during different summers.

The first time I came in to contact with the phenomenon was in the summer of 1979. We had been travelling in China for 4 weeks with a group of about 30 people. The journey back was by train from Beijing via Mongolia and the Soviet Union, a trip of 8 days. During the journey one of our fellow travellers decided to take a picture from the train window at exactly 12 o'clock every day. We were next to him for the countdown, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, click. It made for a series of surprising photographs. It was 12 years before the phenomenon got its name.

This was once a tree, now it is part of a timbering on a rocky English beach. The tides deposit the stones in a different place each time. The erosion by sand, pebbles and salt water make beautiful sculptures of the timber. See also photographs 53, 54, 55 and 58 in ARCHIVES.

With backlight dramatic effects can be achieved. I measured the light coming from the grass left bottom of the centre. With pictures like this, and also the previous one, you have to take care that there is no direct sunlight falling on the lens, because that will result in a completely wrong exposure and a picture without contrast. You could use your free hand to shade the lens. Or put the camera on a tripod and try to get a shadow on the lens, but be sure you stay out of the picture. |
