There was a storm in the making, but fortunately the sun was shining exactly on a couple of villages with white houses on the other side of the bay.

59. "Boats nr. 1"
On the beach you can find all kinds of things, but fishing boats of this size you don't see very often. On this Danish beach the boats are pulled ashore when not in use. The camera position is just above beach level. On some lenses you can see coloured lines and the diafragm numbers are also coloured. First I focused on the boats. The distance I read on the lens I turned to the coloured line with the same colour as the highest diaphragm number (this is the smallest opening) If you turn the diaphragm to the smallest opening, you have achieved maximum depth-of-field. On zoomlenses the lines are curved, because the more tele the less depth-of-field. |

When flying from Japan to the Netherlands one spends hours above this kind of landscape. About 75% of the flying time is above Russia.

21. This photograph too is built up from rectangles. Although the sun was shining brightly, in this street you only see soft, almost shadowless light. Most of the sunlight is reflected from the bluish white wall around the corner on the right. You can tell by the shadows in the doorpanels of the blue door on the right where the light is coming from. Pay attention to the power supply in the top right corner, or maybe it is an Internet connection ;-) |

20. This time a picture taken by my daughter Marianne. This picture, unlike the previous one, is almost completely built up of rectangles. The door, the boards of the door, the piece of metal on the door, the doorstep and even the cobble-stones. The first thing that strikes you are the strong shadows. It does not disturb the picture, it emphasizes the fact that the door is in a different plane from the wall. The shadow of the doorstep forms a nice triangle, and the wall too forms a shadow-triangle on the doorstep, this line continues in the slanting woodstrip on the door. With some simple geometry you can calculate the height of the sun with the help of the shadows. The texture of the door is beautiful, The wood was red in a distant past. The colour of the moisture spots in the wall echoes in the rust of the metal. The cat is in exactly the right position and catches the eye because of the round forms between all the straight lines. Its colour looks like the door. |
